Over the last few years Alan Corkery Hahn has created a rather large body of work. Hahn understands that the meaning of each piece is not limited to that which he intends, but it is hyperbolic to suppose that nothing of Hahn's original intention gets through. The objects that he creates are formed with a purpose that guides interpretation. A variety of Hahn's work has dealt with the following ideas, either individually or in combination: text and its meanings, the primacy of touch, authorship/ownership and art as a commodity, Wabi-sabi and the aesthetics of imperfection, personal identity, gender roles and subjectivity. The thread that connects it all, however, is the persistence of touch, the permanence of our marks and the inviolate nature of mortality. The final products are obscure and delicate monuments memorializing insignificant victories in the futile struggle against impermanence and the march of time. They point out that our struggles to leave a mark sometimes leave nothing but marks of our struggle.

Belinda Hanson
Belinda Hanson lives and works in the mountains of Northern California, where the Sacramento River flows through the canyons just below Mount Shasta. This confluence of geography, mountain and river, affects her aesthetic sensibilities. Hanson's sculpture and sculptural installations are raw, even rugged, yet the end results are surprisingly delicate, sometimes poetic.
"Belinda Hanson's sculptures and sculptural installations immediately place us in another world. Magical and strange, and also strangely familiar… Part of a long history of modernist sculpture of assemblage and found materials (think Duchamp, Schwitters, and the Surrealists), and part of a growing trajectory of contemporary interventions using minimalist forms to explore corporeal sensation and body politics (Think Annette Messager, Lygia Clark, and Kiki Smith), Hanson's work asks us to contemplate the boundary between human and inhuman, nature and artifice, sameness and difference—and feel wonder."—Jeannene Przyblyski, art historian and curator, San Francisco
